What to see in NYC in two days?

More like a day and a half. We are visiting friends (surprising them as they switch flights) and we will have about a day and a half to ourselves. Ive been to Chicago, Boston, VT, NH, OH, DC, many times before, but never NYC. Can anyone recommend some things to do in NYC in that short of time period? Thanks!
