Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in the blood, instead of oxygen, which makes it harder to breathe because the body is not receiving enough oxygen to its systems. Nicotine is addictive because it increases the amount of dopamine, causes feelings of pleasure, in the blood, similar to cocaine and heroin. But nicotine is not what causes the most harmful effects of smoking. A chemical in tobacco called benzopyrene, a carcinogen, changes a person's DNA, and the DNA damage is responsible for lung cancer. With the addictiveness of nicotine, the carcinogenic effects of benzopyrene, and the oxygen depriving abilities of carbon monoxide, tobacco smoking is a very dangerous activity.
