Playing a DVD in my desktop.?

I have winxp, when I play a dvd it is jerky and the sound will not catchup with my movie. Very slooooow sound. When I make my player at a faster speed I loose my sound. Do I need an acelerator or something? I never had a problem untill I reinstalled windows on my reformatted harddrive.
